Take Action To End Trafficking: Strengthen The Child Welfare Response

Abused or neglected young people are vulnerable to the recruitment and control tactics of human traffickers.

Bipartisan House and Senate versions of the Strengthening the Child Welfare Response to Trafficking Act (H.R. 1732 and S.1823), would help improve state child welfare systems in order to better protect children.

H.R. 1732 and S.1823 use existing resources to better serve vulnerable youth. Passing this legislation would be an important step toward creating the safety net we need to end child trafficking in the United States. Continue reading

Stop the Brutal Dog and Cat Meat Trade in Guangdong (Canton), China.

via Change.org

Governor Brown. Tell Sister State, Canton Province, That We’re Opposed to the Torture and Consumption of Dogs and Cats.

California and China’s Guangdong Province are now official sister states. Yet the province is responsible for much of China’s horrendous dog and cat meat trade. It accounts for 40% of the dog meat trade and 70% of the cat meat trade in China.  That’s about 4 million dogs and 2 million cats – many of them stolen pets! There are established laws in Guangdong against selling dogs and cats for consumption yet these laws are blatantly ignored.   Continue reading

Petition – Ban Steel-Jaw Leghold Traps in the US

Ban Steel-Jaw Leghold Traps in the U.S.Steel-jaw leghold traps are nasty, cruel mechanical devices designed to grasp an animal by the leg using spring-operated metal jaws.

In their desperation to escape the pain and terror of being trapped, the captured animal will sometimes bite off the limb that has been caught.

The traps often catch unintended animals, including birds, pets, and animals of rare species.

Trappers kill millions of animals every year, but many of those animals were unintentionally trapped. They’re often refered to as “trash” animals because their fur isn’t worth any money.

About 100 countries – excluding the United States, Canada and Russia – have so far banned the use of leghold traps on the grounds that they are inhumane and indiscriminate. Britain (where they are called gin traps) was one of the first countries to outlaw them in the 1950’s, and the European Union banned steel-jaw leghold traps in 1995.

There is ample scientific evidence to show that even if an innocent animal survives the trapping, it often ends up with damaged tendons or ligaments in its efforts to escape. Trapped animals suffer from torsion injuries, fractures, soft tissue damage and other limb injuries. Innocent animals caught by mistake often have to be euthanized as a result.

Sign this petition to demand that Congress pass legislation to ban steel-jaw leghold traps in the United States.

Louisiana Town to Kill All Pit Bulls and Rottweilers: Those Who Don’t Surrender Face Police Action | The Free Thought Project.

rottweiller

Moreauville, Louisiana – A town in Louisiana has recently voted to ban all Pit Bulls and Rottweilers, calling them “vicious breeds” of dogs. Current owners of these specific breeds have just one more month to either move out of town, or hand their family pet over to the government to be killed.

While there has traditionally been heavy debate over larger breeds of dogs, in recent years the debate has began to die down, because an overwhelming majority of people now agree that like humans, a dog’s temperament and personality are largely based on their upbringing and life experiences.

Sadly, town officials in Moreauville, Louisiana are stuck in a very immature state of mind where they are basically prejudice against breeds of dogs.

Dog owners were notified of the recent ordinance by mail, in a letter which stated that the dogs will be taken away by the local government and killed on December 1st.

Help Stop McDonald’s Cruelty Now!

Almost everyone has heard of McDonald’s, and most people have eaten at the chain at least once, but many people don’t know about the horrific cruelty that goes into every portion of chicken served under the Golden Arches. In the slaughterhouses of McDonald’s U.S. and Canadian chicken suppliers, birds are dumped out of their transport crates and hung upside-down in metal shackles, which often results in broken bones, extreme bruising, and hemorrhaging. Workers have the opportunity to abuse live birds, and birds have their throats cut while they are still conscious. Many birds are immersed in tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still alive and able to feel pain.

McDonald’s has the ability to end these abuses.

A less cruel, USDA-approved method of chicken slaughter called “controlled-atmosphere killing,” or CAK, is now being used in the U.S., and it would cost McDonald’s nothing to demand that its suppliers adopt it. CAK would eliminate the worst abuses currently suffered by chickens killed for McDonald’s. In fact, a 2005 study about CAK produced by McDonald’s concluded that it is far better for animals than the current slaughter method.
Fortunately, some companies are taking action: Chicken suppliers Bell & Evans in Pennsylvania and Mary’s Chickens in California are switching from the standard method of chicken slaughter to CAK. McDonald’s, which claims to be a leader in animal welfare, has no excuse for sitting back and allowing chickens killed for its restaurants to suffer broken wings and legs and be scalded to death in defeathering tanks while other companies phase in this less cruel slaughter method.

Write to McDonald’s now, and demand that it phase in the exclusive use of chickens killed by CAK by requiring that its suppliers switch to this method.

Stop Charging Rape Victims for Forensic Physical Exams! – The Petition Site

Stop Charging Rape Victims for Forensic Physical Exams!Sexual assault victims in Louisiana are being forced to pay out of pocket for their own forensic physical exams. The expenses run into the thousands. A New Orleans woman was questioned and photographed for six hours while nurses collected tissue samples, drew blood and offered medication to prevent pregnancy and STDs.

Eight days after the traumatic ordeal, she received a bill for nearly $2,000. She owed $600 after insurance. If this weren’t bad enough, she received a second bill a few days later, charging an additional $1,700, including an $860 fee for an emergency room visit.

Rape is a crime, and a rape victim’s care and treatment should not be her financial responsibility.
