Stop the Brutal Dog and Cat Meat Trade in Guangdong (Canton), China.

Governor Brown. Tell Sister State, Canton Province, That We’re Opposed to the Torture and Consumption of Dogs and Cats.

California and China’s Guangdong Province are now official sister states. Yet the province is responsible for much of China’s horrendous dog and cat meat trade. It accounts for 40% of the dog meat trade and 70% of the cat meat trade in China.  That’s about 4 million dogs and 2 million cats – many of them stolen pets! There are established laws in Guangdong against selling dogs and cats for consumption yet these laws are blatantly ignored.   Continue reading

A dog fight takes place every day in the UK. It’s time for action.

A dog fight takes place every day in the UK. It’s time for action.

If anyone thinks dog fighting is a thing of the past, then sadly they are wrong. Last year the League Against Cruel Sports commissioned a ground-breaking report which revealed that a dog fight was taking place every day in the UK.

It is time for stronger penalties to be introduced, and for appropriate action to be taken against perpetrators.

Find out more about the League’s campaign against dog fighting in the UK, including our latest investigations.

Dog fighting is barbaric and we cannot allow it to be part of a modern society. Cupcake (pictured above) was a bait dog used in dog fighting who was rescued and successfully rehabilitated. Please sign the petition for the sake of dogs like her.

Urgent: Stop Bull Torture Festival!

According to news reports, India’s central government plans to amend The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, to permit jallikattu, bull races, and other events that use bulls.

Video footage from jallikattu events shows that terrified bulls are deliberately disoriented, chased, kicked, punched, jumped on, dragged to the ground, and stabbed. People even twist and bite the bulls’ tails to agitate them in this “bull-taming sport.”

During races, bulls are often hit with nail-studded sticks and pushed beyond the point of exhaustion. In bullfights, a round ends when one of the bulls either is killed or manages to flee.

PETA India has long campaigned against the use of bulls in such competitions. In 2014, India’s Supreme Court passed a judgment in favor of PETA India and the Animal Welfare Board of India confirming a ban on jallikattu, bullfights, and bull races.

Bullfighting – why?

I can’t imagine the terror a bull must feel as it is chased, slapped, punched and yelled at as it runs through crowds. I can’t image the fear it must feel when a group of people surround it and kill it with knives, fists and whatever else they have handy. I can’t imagine how it must feel when, in its dying moments, it sees two men fighting over who claims the ‘honour’ of dealing the killing blow. And I can’t even begin to imagine what is wrong with these people, that they see it as ok to frighten, abuse and torture a living creature.

Please read this article and sign the petition, calling on the EU to stop using public funding for these cruel, barbaric events. Public funding of over £110 MILLION, which could be used for healthcare or education.

Let’s make change happen, sign the petition and together we can help make this world a better and safer place for animals.

Help Stop McDonald’s Cruelty Now!

Almost everyone has heard of McDonald’s, and most people have eaten at the chain at least once, but many people don’t know about the horrific cruelty that goes into every portion of chicken served under the Golden Arches. In the slaughterhouses of McDonald’s U.S. and Canadian chicken suppliers, birds are dumped out of their transport crates and hung upside-down in metal shackles, which often results in broken bones, extreme bruising, and hemorrhaging. Workers have the opportunity to abuse live birds, and birds have their throats cut while they are still conscious. Many birds are immersed in tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still alive and able to feel pain.

McDonald’s has the ability to end these abuses.

A less cruel, USDA-approved method of chicken slaughter called “controlled-atmosphere killing,” or CAK, is now being used in the U.S., and it would cost McDonald’s nothing to demand that its suppliers adopt it. CAK would eliminate the worst abuses currently suffered by chickens killed for McDonald’s. In fact, a 2005 study about CAK produced by McDonald’s concluded that it is far better for animals than the current slaughter method.
Fortunately, some companies are taking action: Chicken suppliers Bell & Evans in Pennsylvania and Mary’s Chickens in California are switching from the standard method of chicken slaughter to CAK. McDonald’s, which claims to be a leader in animal welfare, has no excuse for sitting back and allowing chickens killed for its restaurants to suffer broken wings and legs and be scalded to death in defeathering tanks while other companies phase in this less cruel slaughter method.

Write to McDonald’s now, and demand that it phase in the exclusive use of chickens killed by CAK by requiring that its suppliers switch to this method.
