Speak out against the cruel Yulin dog meat festival

Petition via Humane Society International.

The Festival of Cruelty

Thousands of dogs and cats, many of them stolen pets, are captured and transported over long distances under horrific conditions to Yulin, a city in China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region. There, they’re held in crowded cages without food or water until they are brutally killed. Often, they are beaten and their throats are slit in front of other terrified animals. Most Chinese citizens reject this practice, and we’re committed to supporting them in ending the festival.

Petition – Tell Whole Foods to stop LYING and treat their farm animals better!

Whole Foods are a grocery firm in America who claim to have a ‘5-step animal welfare rating’ to show you ‘your way of knowing how the animals were raised for the meat you are buying’. This is the photograph that accompanies their 5-step webpage (www.wholefoodsmarket.com/mission-values/animal-welfare/5-step-animal-welfare-rating).

Cows in open fieldThey claim that if you are buying their chicken, beef, pork or turkey, that you can be assured that the focus of their farmers is on the welfare of their animals. They state that they follow ‘specific husbandry and management practices that promote farm-animal welfare’. Continue reading

Petition – Stop the horrific chuckwagon race & calf roping events at the Calgary stampede

The Calgary Stampede is still celebrating this year by killing more horses during Its chuckwagon race event – spurring outrage from animal advocates and calls to ban chuckwagon races for good.  Calf roping is another heartless event that damages the bodies/psyche of innocent calves that have no idea where they are, or why.

The accidents that lead to the deaths happen all-too regularly with horses being pushed past their limits, terrified and exhausted with all of the unknowns surrounding them.  Many horses die of heart failure or suffer strokes; while many others suffer severe injuries, and are instantly euthanized.

Calf roping is another tragic event that is held at the Calgary Stampede rodeo.  Calves, who should be with their mothers, resting and being nurtured, are released into the corral, caught around the throat/neck with strong ropes; jerked backward off their feet, and thrown to the ground onto their backs.  Their eyes bulge with terror, their hearts are damaged, and their necks are whiplashed/damaged beyond repair.  Their limbs are also damaged.  The psyche of these gentle, trusting creatures is shattered.

Despite recent attempts to improve safety, it’s clear that nothing can be done to ensure that horses/calves will not continue to be injured or killed for nothing more than entertainment in the future.

Urgent: Stop Bull Torture Festival!

According to news reports, India’s central government plans to amend The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, to permit jallikattu, bull races, and other events that use bulls.

Video footage from jallikattu events shows that terrified bulls are deliberately disoriented, chased, kicked, punched, jumped on, dragged to the ground, and stabbed. People even twist and bite the bulls’ tails to agitate them in this “bull-taming sport.”

During races, bulls are often hit with nail-studded sticks and pushed beyond the point of exhaustion. In bullfights, a round ends when one of the bulls either is killed or manages to flee.

PETA India has long campaigned against the use of bulls in such competitions. In 2014, India’s Supreme Court passed a judgment in favor of PETA India and the Animal Welfare Board of India confirming a ban on jallikattu, bullfights, and bull races.

Oppose the Pamplona Bull Run and bullfighting

pamplona action main image.jpg

The San Fermin bull running festival in Pamplona, Spain commences on Monday 6th July. The main component of the festival, the bull running, commences on the second day and will see many bulls, up until the 14th July, subjected to the arduous mental and physical torture of being forced to participate in the bull runs before their public executions in front of thousands of jeering tourists in the bullfights that follow.

Please join us in opposing the Pamplona Bull Run and bullfighting by sending a message to Topdeck Travel today, asking them not to continue promotion of trips to Pamplona

via League Against Cruel Sports.

Bullfighting – why?

I can’t imagine the terror a bull must feel as it is chased, slapped, punched and yelled at as it runs through crowds. I can’t image the fear it must feel when a group of people surround it and kill it with knives, fists and whatever else they have handy. I can’t imagine how it must feel when, in its dying moments, it sees two men fighting over who claims the ‘honour’ of dealing the killing blow. And I can’t even begin to imagine what is wrong with these people, that they see it as ok to frighten, abuse and torture a living creature.

Please read this article and sign the petition, calling on the EU to stop using public funding for these cruel, barbaric events. Public funding of over £110 MILLION, which could be used for healthcare or education.

Let’s make change happen, sign the petition and together we can help make this world a better and safer place for animals.

Petition – Namibia: Don’t De-Horn Rhinos for Profit!

Please sign the petition at Care2.

Namibia: Don't De-Horn Rhinos for Profit!

The Namibian government has been cutting the horns off rhinos in national parks and private conservation reserves in an attempt to deter poachers. Poachers have killed 14 of Namibia’s rhinos so far this year to sell their horns for use in unscientific Chinese medicine that has never been proven to improve any ailment.

While the government’s actions may be well intentioned, cutting off the rhino’s horns strips them of all the protection they have against poachers. In a disturbing twist, the government is seeking permission from the United Nations to sell the horns for profit, undermining their claim that they have the rhinos’ best interests at heart.

Please sign the petition to urge the Namibian government to focus their efforts on controlling poachers without stripping rhinos of their natural defense and beauty.

Petition – Save the SEALIFE London Aquarium penguins

The Gentoo penguins at the Sea Life London Aquarium are kept in a small underground room, with no natural light and completely unacceptable quality of life.

Lex Croucher started this petition after visiting the Sea Life London Aquarium and seeingthe conditions that their Gentoo penguins are kept in. Kept underground, with a tiny area to live and swim and no natural light, they’re clearly very unhappy and need to be moved.  Continue reading

lobsterOn November 8, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Alabama, plans to hold its annual Lobsterfest event, at which approximately 2,500 lobsters will be boiled alive—a method of killing that researcher Gordon Gunter described in the journal Science as “unnecessary torture.” When dropped into scalding water, lobsters whip their bodies wildly and scrape the sides of the pot in a desperate attempt to escape. PETA has received complaints from Huntsville residents who were horrified to learn that lobsters will be tortured as part of an annual church fundraiser.

Please contact Lobsterfest organizers and urge them to replace the lobster boil with an animal-friendly fundraiser that truly reflects Christian values of mercy and compassion.
